Biden administration announces monkeypox coordinator as 3 states declare state of emergency


The Biden administration has announced its monkeypox response team this morning as three states declared the outbreak a state of emergency.

In a statement released early Tuesday morning, the White House named FEMA’s Robert Fenton as the White House National Monkeypox Response Coordinator and Dr. Demetre Daskalakis as the White House National Monkeypox Response Deputy Coordinator. Currently the director of the CDC Division of HIV Prevention, Daskalakis is widely known as a national expert on health issues affecting the LGBTQ community.

The White House also said that 737,000 additional doses of the monkeypox vaccine were shipped out on Monday, and testing capacity has expanded from 6,000 tests per week to over 80,000 tests per week.

The announcement comes as California, New York, and Illinois each declared a state of emergency due to the outbreak. Meanwhile, the director of Ohio’s department of health declared monkeypox “ a disease of significant public concern ” in the state.

As of last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded nearly 6,000 cases of monkeypox in the U.S. since May. The World Health Organization has declared monkeypox a global health emergency. The […]
