Critical Race Theory: My concern for public education in Florida | Opinion


Your Turn After months of expressing his disdain for Critical Race Theory (CRT), Gov. Ron Desantis banned the use of it in public schools in late April. Doing so, in his words, would prevent “corporate and educational indoctrination.”

Texts must now follow the new state standards for instructional material and avoid even mentioning prohibited topics, including CRT. Considering his remarks, as well as those from other Floridian lawmakers, it’s apparent that they’ve created this law without a firm grasp of what exactly CRT is—and how they’ve legalized a double standard for Black students and white students.

Embedded in CRT is an explanation of systemic racism’s existence in American institutions, which is likely what most concerns its opponents. The new law attempts to protect students from feelings of “guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress because of actions, in which the individual played no part, committed in the past by other members of the same race, color, sex, or national origin”. To do so, it severely restricts the teaching that posits racism as an integral part of America’s past that still affects how elements of our culture function today.
