Environmental Learning Center in Wabasso plans to begin building education and event pavilion

The Thomas R. Schidel Education and Event pavilion for the Environmental Learning Center is expected to break ground April 14.

The new campus enhancement is named in honor of the Vero Beach inventor and businessman who pledged $1 million in 2020 to fund the design, construction and maintenance of the new facility in Indian River County.

“I am thrilled that this project has been given the go-ahead to move forward,” said Schidel. “I feel confident that it will be put to good use by the wonderful team at the ELC to provide education to benefit our environment and allow for so many other open-air community events.”

He said it will be a full-circle venture commemorating his deep affinity for nature.

“I hope it brings joy to all who experience it,” Schidel said.

The pavilion includes a multipurpose outdoor classroom and event space/stage that can seat 80 to 100 people. It has indoor and outdoor kitchen areas, a Live Oak ringed grass oval that can accommodate up to 1,000 guests and handicap accessible restrooms with showers.
