Fayetteville mom: For Mother’s Day, NC legislators can vote for better maternal healthcare

This Mother’s Day, North Carolina’s state legislature has an opportunity to give North Carolina mothers a gift that could keep on giving — expanded health coverage for everyone who needs it, including critical postpartum care for new moms.

I urge the parties on both sides of the aisle to put partisan politics aside and do the right thing for North Carolina women and babies by passing the state’s comprehensive Momnibus Act. Signing this bill into law is all the more urgent because hundreds of thousands of low-income women in our state still lack health care coverage, thanks to the political gridlock that for too long has stalled Medicaid expansion.

Thanks to the recently passed federal relief law, the American Rescue Plan, North Carolina legislators have more incentive than ever to extend affordable healthcare to everyone who needs it, without creating a fiscal burden for the state. The federal package increases Medicaid funding to states so they can cover the uninsured and extend postpartum coverage for new moms from 60 days to a full year.
