Healthcare affordability is on the line for NJ families. Congress must help | Opinion

Special to the USA TODAY Network As we slowly begin to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, I fear we are headed for anotherhealthcare crisis that will devastate hardworking New Jersey families. But this crisis is preventable – andonly Congress can prevent it from happening.

The American Rescue Plan, which was signed into law last year, was a gamechanger for Americans. Itmeant that during a critical time for many, families no longer needed to make impossible decisions likechoosing between quality healthcare coverage or putting food on the table. Thanks to the AmericanRescue Plan, millions of Americans — including more than 280,000 New Jersey residents — currently have accessto quality, affordable health care coverage. Families are now saving approximately $2,400 per year ontheir health insurance due to premium savings made possible by the American Rescue Plan.

Unfortunately, these savings are in jeopardy. If Congress doesn’t act soon, the expanded tax credits thatfinally make healthcare affordable for so many will expire by the end of the year, and premiums willdrastically increase as a result. For many families in New Jersey, this will mean their access to affordablehealth care and coverage will go away, too.
