Infrastructure and Immigration Reform Will Boost U.S. Economy, Says Chamber of Commerce CEO. Why She Sees Bipartisan Support.

Given the current political division exhibited in the latest relief package, that might seem optimistic. But Clark, one of Barron’s 100 Most Influential Women in U.S. Finance and a self-described optimist, sees both so crucial for the country’s long-term economic health and competitiveness that it could push politicians to find common ground.

Clark has been leading a transformation at the country’s most powerful business lobby in recent years, making it more inclusive and bipartisan as companies face a less business-friendly backdrop and new demands related to the pandemic, as well as climate and social justice.

Barron’s talked with Clark, who added the title of CEO to her role this month, about what the economy needs to recover, how that happens in a polarized capital, and what investors should expect for U.S.-China relations. An edited and condensed transcript follows.
