Mississippi gov. signs law banning transgender athletes from playing women’s sports

It will be illegal for transgender athletes to play girl’s or women’s sports in Mississippi starting July 1 — barring legal challenges.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signed Senate Bill 2536 into law Thursday, blocking trans girls and women from playing on teams in accordance to their gender identity. The first-term Republican previously issued steadfast support for the discriminatory measure.

“I will sign our bill to protect young girls from being forced to compete with biological males for athletic opportunities,” he tweeted March 4.

Alphonso David, president of the Human Rights Campaign, issued a statement in response to the news: “Governor Reeves’ eagerness to become the face of the latest anti-transgender push is appalling, as he chooses fear and division over facts and science. This law is a solution in search of a problem, and legislators in Mississippi have not provided any examples of Mississippi transgender athletes gaming the system for a competitive advantage because none exist.”
