What Hochul left undone during Pride: Protecting LGBTI+ New Yorkers’ healthcare | Opinion

Special to the USA TODAY Network This year’s Pride Month was particularly meaningful, bringing both highs — the return of fully in-person celebrations for the first time since COVID-19 — and lows — the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, threatening further erosion of the rights we hold dear.

Members of the LGBTQI+ community and women’s rights advocates joined together. Many marched in solidarity and pledged to do whatever it takes to maintain and strengthen hard-fought protections for some of our most vulnerable New Yorkers.

Despite New York’s claim to be a progressive safe harbor state, there are many threats to LGBTQI+ individuals’ rights in our own backyard — including a dangerous Cuomo-era plan that will reduce access to life-saving care and services and potentially prolong the fight to end HIV/AIDS.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, who appeared at several Pride events and publicly expressed her support for our community while seeking our support for her primary campaign, had the chance to put her words into action and repeal this plan but failed to do so.
