Your Turn I agree wholeheartedly with DeVoe Moore (“Want to reverse inflation? Insist on a strong work ethic”) about the importance of a strong work ethic, how it starts with parents and leaders, and why we should encourage youth to work to better themselves, our country, and those around them. But the good and honorable message then spirals down a troubling track.
Let’s be honest. Stimulus money was congressionally approved at the federal level to reach and benefit small businesses, local communities, families, and individuals. The money is channeled through state and local governments. So, if the allegation of leveraging votes is true, there are at least two political parties that benefit down the distribution chain.
And no, government spending does not “create socialism” nor is government by default controlling free enterprise or an enemy of economic freedom. Good governance is an essential underpinning of our democracy that ensures the equitable protection of public health and safety. Also, regulation is not something to be disparaged. Government regulations ensure that there are protections for state and national assets that are important for every American citizen’s quality of life, like clean air and water.
